HTTPS protocol transmits information in an encrypted format between a client Browser and a receiving Server. When a web page is HTTPS it means that Secure Socket Layer (SSL) has been enabled. SSL, a protocol developed by Netscape Communications is generally invoked for web pages that involves buying goods or services online or for entering other personal information such as credit card or social security information. Information is transmitted in an encrypted form between the client browser and the end Server and vice versa. Without SSL being enabled, information or data is transmitted without encryption and is insecure. Anyone can intercept the data and misuse it.  How to know that the page is secure? The webpage begins with https instead of http. Look for some visible indicators as well.
