Windows XP Professional Edition has a Backup utility that helps to backup and restore data. The program can be automated to run at scheduled intervals which is a nice and desirable feature. The outline of the steps to create a backup are listed below: - Select Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup to start the Backup and Restore wizard. Click <Next>.
- Select 'Back up files and settings radio button (checked by default) and click <Next>
- Determine what to Backup. The options available are
My documents and settings Everyone's document and settings All information on this computer Let me choose what to backup. The last option allows you to select the Drives/Folders/Files that you may wish to backup - Select a drive to backup the data. By default Floppy Drive is listed. Click <Browse> button and select an alternative detacheable drive such as CD ROM or Jump Drive in an port to hold the backup data. Click <Next>.
- Review your backup settings. You can click <Finish> button to start backup of data immediately. However, if you wish to set up a schedule for the backup or set up other options, follow the remaining steps:
Automate Backup -
You can automate or schedule backup for regular intervals by the following steps: - Click <Advanced> button to set up advanced back up options.
- Select the type of backup - you can set up Incremental, Daily, or Normal backup
- Select 'Verify data after backup' option. This step ensure that the backup is successful
- Specify whether to append backup to existing backup or replace the existing backups. Click <Next>.
- Select 'Later' radio button to schedule backup of data.
- Click <Set Schedule> button.Schedule Job window appears.
- You can schedule the backup job to run daily, weekly, monthly etc. In the following screenshot, the backup job is scheduled to run every week on Saturday at 3.00 P.M
- Click <OK> on setting the schedule. You will be returned to the Schedule window. Click <Next> and complete.
Windows XP Home Windows XP Home edition has also a backup utility that has to be installed from the source CD. It does not appear in the default install nor does it appear in the 'Add or Remove Components. The following are the steps: - Load the Operating System Disk in your CD Drive
- Right-click on the Start Menu and select Explore and navigate to your CD ROM Drive.
- Open <VALUEASS> folder.
- Open <MSFT> folder.
- Open <NTBACKUP> folder.
- Double-click to run NTBACKUP.exe to install Windows Backup utility. Once installed, follow the steps given above (for XP Professional) to backup files.
Windows OneCare Windows OneCare aims to simplify Backup. It provides a comprehensive suite of tools for tuning (antivirus, disk defragment etc) as well as to backup data.
