The most common use of the Shift key is to use Capital letters while typing. There are other uses of the Shift key, that might come in handy.
- To open an HTML link in a new window, press the Shift key and click the link
- Recycle Bin in Windows gives us a comfort zone. Deleted files by mistake? you could retrieve it from the Recycle Bin (until that is deleted). If the Recycle Bin is not managed at periodic intervals, it might take a big chunk of space too. Is there a method to delete files directly and bypass the Recycle Bin? Yes the Shift key comes in handy. Select the file to delete, and click Shift + delete. This would delete the file directly. Caution! Take an extra look at the file that is to be deleted as the file cannot be retrieved.
- In Windows XP there is a quick way to see the available and total disk space on the PC. Hold Shift key and double-click 'My Computer' on your desktop. Not getting the drive details? Ensure that View > Details is checked in the 'My Computer' folder
- Holding Shift + Ctrl key and clicking the left or right arrow (that you typically find at the bottom of the key board) causes the cursor to move one word left or right
- Similarly, holding Shift + Ctrl key and clicking the top or down arrow causes the cursor to move up or down by a line
- Ctrl + Shift + Home will take you to the top of the document and Ctrl + Shift + End will take you to the end of a document
