The autonumber (Numbering) feature can also be extended to tables in Microsoft Word. The autonumber feature also changes the number suitably for any row inserts.

The steps are the same as you would do for a paragraph format, and is listed below:

• Create a table in Word, with say two or three columns
• Designate the first column as S.No - the intent is to use the autonumber feature here

• Place the cusrsor in the S No field and instead of manually entering the number, click the 'Numbering' icon in the toolbar. Note that '1' is displayed in that field
• Complete the other columns in the first row and press 'tab' for continuing in the second row
• Note that '2' gets displayed in the S.No field
• Try inserting a row in between the first and second, and note that the number sequence is changed suitably. Needless to say, if you are entering text in a large word table (that has manual numbering), it would be a lengthy and painstaking task to correct all the S.Nos in case of row inserts

How to change from manual numbering to autonumber?

If you have started entering text in a table and manually insert S.Nos, how to switch to autonumber?

• Highlight all the Nos entered manually, and delete
• Highlight as above the empty cells, and click 'Numbering' icon in the toolbar
• Note that the S.Nos are populated
