In Microsoft Word you can create a custom toolbar to display the formatting styles and features that are commonly used.
The following are the steps to create a custom toolbar, explained with screen shots. - Open Microsoft Word document
- Select View > Toolbars > Customize from the menu. 'Customize' window is displayed
- Select 'Toolbars' tabbed region and click the 'New' button. 'New Toolbar' window appears.
 - Enter a name in the 'Toolbar name' field. Select the document to which the toolbar should be made available to. Selecting 'Normal' will make available the toolbar to all Word documents. To make available the toolbar only to a specific document, select that document instead of 'Normal'. Click the 'OK' button. Note that the new toolbar has been added to the list. Also note that a small pop-up window with the new toolbar name is displayed in the 'Word' document.
 - Drag that popup window to the top of the Word document and place it below the existing toolbar.
- Open the 'Commands' tabbed region. Scroll down and select 'Styles' in the 'Categories' region on the left.
 - Note that the available 'Commands' for the document are displayed to the right.
- To add a 'Command' to the toolbar, drag the command out of the command region to the toolbar. Repeat for all the commands required.
 - You can change the wordings for the 'commands' that appear in the toolbar and also add an image by doing the following:
- While the 'Customize' window is still open, right-click on a 'command' in the toolbar, and enter a new name in the 'Name' field.
 - Right-click as above and select 'Change Button Image' to select an image for the custom command.
 - Click the 'Close' button to close the 'Customize' window.
- You are done. You can see the custom toolbar appears at the top.
